I Am Legend is a novel written by Richard Matheson, released in 1954, which stands as a sort of cornerstone of science fiction, because in a certain sense it rewrites it. It is a post-apocalyptic story, which the writer was able to appreciate in a dense brevity. The novel is about an apocalypse, about a man like many others, Robert Neville, who finds himself alone in a world populated by monsters, with no way out. A dramatic story, which highlights human weaknesses, pain, the uncertainty of the future.
I Am Legend then became a 2007 film, the last inspired by Matheson's work, directed by Francis Lawrence, with Will Smith as the protagonist, in the role of Robert Neville. I Am Legend from the book to the 2007 film completely disappoints, because it is a completely different story. What is kept is the title and very few other elements inserted in Special Data different contexts. The film shines the light on the figure of the hero with whom American cinema is now saturated. Matheson's Robert Neville is a man like any other, who has nothing to do with the actor chosen for the film. A film that is compelling and well made, but as a film in its own right, as a cinematographic work freely inspired by the novel.
ust as the book seems to focus attention on the behavior of an ordinary individual in the face of a catastrophic event, so the film exploits the charm and strength of the cliché hero to entertain the audience with special effects, action and adrenaline scenes and a dramatic ending, yes, but with a happy ending that we don't find in Matheson's novel. I Am Legend by Francis Lawrence therefore modifies not only the story and the main character, but also the surrounding ones, the setting itself and the protagonist's past. Two stories, therefore, to read and see without taking each other into account. Who knows Matheson's novel? Have you only seen the movie? What impressions did it leave on you?
